Why do kids need chiropractic
A good way of preventing injury in children is to ensure regular chiropractic care, which helps to keep the joints and ligaments supple. Once your child begins to turn over, sit up, crawl, pull up, walk and becomes more mobile, chiropractic becomes very useful.
During each of these growing phases, chiropractic care can ensure easier and smoother transitions, and lead to fewer injuries. Bumps and bruises are common for kids. Micro trauma could be the result of tripping or falling, or some other accident. Unfortunately, over time these micro traumas can lead to subluxations, which increase the chances of long-term health issues. When it comes to treating misalignments or subluxations, chiropractors are experts in locating subluxations, or misalignments, and correcting them.
Though yet to be proven, some studies have even suggested that chiropractic could be more effective than medication. Not only have I treated numerous children, but I also treated my own children when they were little.

This condition leads to other health conditions and physical issues.
These include ear infections, headaches, asthma, and much more. Pediatric care requires a different set of techniques. A chiropractor who treats children will have undergone specialized training. Since chiropractic care works to release stress in the body, it can improve sleep. Certain tensions can cause sleeping troubles such as insomnia. Chiropractic care can also help address the issue of bed wetting. This support can also improve their immunity functions. Adjustments end stomach problems such as constipation or reflux.
Chiropractic care helps children improve their mood and attitude by releasing tension. Improved sleep will also lessen stress for your child and help them function during the day. The benefits of child chiropractic adjustments extend into the nervous system.
Chiropractors make sure the spine is growing in the correct way. This prevents and treats certain nervous system issues like ear infections.
This care can also treat asthma, allergies, and other respiratory issues. Many other professions perform "manipulations. Justin Smith, MD. Brad,I certainly get how structuring studies for chiropractic interventions would be a real challenge but that doesn't mean that it gets a pass on having to prove how it works. Using a singular story case study to prove a certain treatment works is dangerous because both clinicians pediatricians, too and parents have a huge bias towards wanting to state that the intervention they chose worked.
Certainly adverse reactions to medications are a huge problem and one that we are continually trying to address and study. As new information comes out we adjust what choices we make. That is why continued ongoing study, even of "tried and true" interventions is critical to get our patients the best care possible. I understand and agree with you that more research is needed within the chiropractic profession and there are many people that are attempting to make that push.
But as it comes down to it, you justify not taking children to chiropractors by referencing injury due to a lack of research and experience. When you state in your response that adverse drug events ADEs are a "huge problem," I believe we can give a clear perspective of the relative danger of "manipulations" in which you report 14 cases of harm in to ADEs. The National Center for Health Statistics reports children 0 to 18 years of age seeking medical treatment for an ADE between and is , In fact, the most modest number I have been able to find for ADE was between and You state that you are constantly researching to improve, but this study clearly explains that ADEs grew substantially over time--from 6, in to 11, in I'm not saying that there is not a place for a pediatrician, in fact, you are part of one of the most important fields in the world.
But, maybe there is a place for something different, gentle and relatively safe. In regards to your statement "Those things they do that could be an alternative to traditional treatments are commonly performed for conditions that self-resolve. We tried diet, medication, physical therapy and he even had electrical probes attached to his bottom at a women's incontinence center in hopes of teaching him to completely void his bladder.
Over FOUR years of following our pediatricians recommended treatment only to have our poor little guy having to change clothes at school and generally being completely frustrated.
Our neighbors kept recommending chiropractic care but we did not heed their advice due to articles such as yours. We finally gave in one day and after one, yes ONE, lower spine manipulation, he never had daytime wetting again. That was 8 years ago. We still get vaccines and still go to the pediatrician for annual well-checkups and illness treatment - our chiropractor has not tried to talk us out of traditional medical care.
I would love to see medical doctors and chiropractors come together to realize the benefits of both types of treatment and start supporting each other.
Would have saved my son from years of embarrassment and frustration. I appreciate your thoughts on the subject. As a teenager I saw a chiropractor for many sports related injuries because my mother "doesn't believe in science" and even when I had a broken leg and ankle, told me I was fine and just needed to put some ice on it.
After a week of being unable to move without passing out, my grandmother called an ambulance and I got to see a medical doctor. Not a total loss, but certainly not worth the payments made. Now, as an adult, I have a 7 year old son who seems to my mother to be unfocused and a dreamer.
She spoke to her chiropractor this morning at her own appointment and told my mom to let me know that my son has a neck issue and he could fix that if I bring him in. This man has never met my son. Has no information regarding his health or past injuries except for my mother's word that he is unfocused and day dreams.
He's 7. Of course this is how he behaves. After hearing his message for me I decided that my son will never see a chiropractor. I know from my own experience that this is a common attitude.
It makes me feel like I'm being conned because no doctor can cure everything without any knowledge of the patient whatsoever. I don't believe in miracles. It may be helpful for some people and some conditions but I simply can't shake the feeling that I'm being taken for a ride.
