What is the difference between christianity and mormonism

I have found that the Mormon doctrines cannot be authenticated as being from God like the Bible can. Mormonism stands or falls on the Book of Mormon which it is easy to see had more than one contributor. For one the influence of Sidney Rigdon is undeniable. Rigdon defected from the Disciples of Christ over the problem of Owenism, a utopian scheme. He brought to the Mormons the Disciples doctrine of Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, which permeates the Book of Mormon etc.

Rigdon would have also rejected Justification since he was a student of Alex. Campbell the founder of the Disciples movement. The plagiarizing of Swedenborg was more than apparent which led to defections because his teachings were readily available on the frontier. It became obvious that Smith was stitching together his own theology and that he was not truly a Revelator as he claimed. Eventually Smith shed much of the influence of Rigdon and came out as a polytheist.

The first three men who saw the plates in a vision all left the Mormon Church. It had to be in a vision because the angel Maroni said that anyone who saw the plates would die. The Mormon hierarchy is corrupt. With one sweep it excommunicated ten of their own historians because of what they discovered about the origins and practices of Smith and his Mormons. I recently, as a born again believer in Jesus and grace, started dating a mormon woman.

Not knowing much but what I had heard in rumor about the mormon church being a cult, I have treaded lightly with her until I researched further. I now realize I must end this and just continue to pray for her and her family all grown up in this cultish practice and hope God perhaps uses me in His ways to affect her thinking and perhaps one day she might repent and find the truth before He returns for the actual true church.

Thanks all for your input. Thank you for this article. I have a very good friend who is Mormon and insists he believes the same thing that I do, I am protestant.

I have gleaned from him that he believes that salvation must be earned by works. I appreciate your thoughtful article and your direct responses in the comments. Is Smoking Marijuana Sinful? Next: Predestination Vs Free Will. Privacy Policy.

Why should God let you into Heaven? Do you know the answer? Are you confident in your salvation? How is Mormonism different from Christianity? History of Mormonism Mormonism only dates to the 19th century A. Mormonism Mormons views about God have varied widely over their short history. Mormonism Mormons view the doctrine of the trinity as a false and pagan notion.

Mormonism Mormons hold to a very complex and distinct system of views on salvation. The Holy Spirit Christianity Christians hold that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity , and as such He has a personality and has existed eternally. Mormonism Mormons have a very complex, and often changing, view of the atonement. The Mormon vs Christian church Christianity Christians believe that all true Christians make up the true church.

It is a supposed record of ancient groups in the Americas, and begins with a family moving from Jerusalem, shortly before its destruction, to the New World. The climax of the record is a visit of the resurrected Jesus Christ in the Americas. Although the records, inscribed on gold plates, were lost shortly after this in the fourth century, the burier of the book, Moroni, is said to have returned in the early 19 th century as an angel in a revelation to Joseph Smith and led him to the plates.

Smith then translated these into English as the Book of Mormon. The lack of evidence about these golden plates and a message reflective of the times led many critics to believe that the book is a fanciful fabrication.

As shown by the acceptance of the extra-biblical works, Mormons maintain a canon open to further revelation from God. Mormons believe that the death of the apostles led to the death of apostolic succession and that the traditional church perpetuated a false line of apostolic succession.

Christian critics argue that the canon is closed because the last two verses of the Book of Revelation say that if you add or subtract from the New Testament you will be accursed, but Mormons hold this warning to be only true of the Book of Revelation and not the entire Bible.

Robinson states that it is unbiblical to believe that the Bible is a closed canon as there is no biblical statement within it that prohibits additional revelation and that the Book of Revelation was written prior to the formation of the Bible; therefore, the warning can only speak to its own book. Another point of divergence between traditional Christian doctrine and Mormon doctrine is the belief in human deification and thus the nature of God.

According to a recent study, over three-quarters of Mormons surveyed stated belief in pre-mortal existence of humans as spirits, human deification during mortal life, and eternal marriage after death. Mormons also present the fact that orthodox Christian groups have a similar view toward human deification. However, Bill McKeever, an American author and well-known critic of Mormonism, asserts that the divide is just too wide for Mormonism to be considered Christian.

The belief that God is married is unique to Mormonism. Praise His Holy Name. All he ask us to do is trust Him! Trust, and will be born again! The Holy Spirit will take up residence inside you, leading a new man to everlasting! It is a place the bible describes to be constant weeping and knashing of you teeth.. You Jason have blasphemed my Ho,y Lord by claiming lies about His truth. Think of it this way, speaking of way , early Christians were known as the way,,,Jesus is The Way,the only way to the one True God and Father of us all, our creator, there is many false ways and a real enemy who deceives the whole world, there is my way to your way to his and hers and to all the ways handed down and ways learned but only one Way and that is Jesus he is the way the truth and the life,no man comes unto the Father except thru Him, very important and Jesus said it for a reason buyback to what I was saying , Christianity is not a religion, it is reality ,, please look at it like this, mankind and his organization skills are not always very good and like I said there is a real enemy in the world, its the the reality of this current earth age and Jesus is the Way and so much more God Bless us each and everyone.

I enjoyed your comment very well put. People all talk about the different faults that different religions have and to be sincere their are parts of the bible that have been lost. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts instead of saying what is wrong with this or that religion. Theirs flaws in everything. I dont think their is one unflawed religion we can think of.

Thank you again. I will not cast my pearls among swine! Humanly speaking, the Bible was written by approximately 40 men of diverse backgrounds over the course of years. Despite being penned by different authors over 15 centuries, the Bible does not contradict itself and does not contain any errors. The authors all present different perspectives, but they all proclaim the same one true God, and the same one way of salvation—Jesus Christ John ; Acts Man today finds on the internet Bible verses rearranged out of context to believe their own lies to honor man rather than God.

There were over prophecies foretold about the coming Jewish Messiah — hundreds of years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Jesus fulfilled all of these prophecies. They failed and are proven liars. They make alotta noise to drown truth and the is choice is ours to believe in what man has done or in what Jesus has done on the cross.

Ultimately, above the human authors, the Bible was written by God. God superintended the human authors of the Bible so that, while using their own writing styles and personalities, they still recorded exactly what God intended. The Bible was not dictated by God, but it was perfectly guided and entirely inspired by Him. Be a light unto yourself? The true Bibical Jesus is the light of the world. John There seemeth a way right unto man, but at the end thereof are the way of death.

Proverbs There are a lot of comments here from people trying to convince you one way or the other as to which is right. This article does get a lot right, but not everything. However, I believe the question was what is the difference between Mormons and Christians, not which was right.

But you know what? You want to know what a Catholic believes? Ask a Catholic. You want to know what a Baptist believes? Ask a Baptist. You want to know what a Mormon believes?

Ask a Mormon. You want to know which is right? Ask God. James If you really want to know, ask the person who can give you the most correct answer. No vision, no angels, but he HAS answered my question in prayer. Try it for yourself. I am Christian, not Mormon. The only way to understand why we like the Book of Mormon is to read it yourself. If you are going to quote it, quote it right. Nobody in the church calls it that.

If you are going to say we believe in something name it correctly. I also find it strange that you say Christians. As though every Christian sect believes the same thing. Not every Christian sect believe in the Trinitarian God. Some believe they are 3 distinct beings, and they have a physical state of being, just like the Mormons. Mormons believe in Salvation, just like Christians. As to the 3 Gods statement.

We believe in one supreme God, what you mentioned as Heavenly Father. Like a President has a Vice President, and Secretary. The all work together unified as one in purpose, but we do not worship them individually. He speaks to us through the Holy Ghost.

We believe that Jesus Christ was born of the virgin Mary. What is a unnatural birth? Or did you mean conception? We believe exactly what you said about Mormons regarding responsibility for sin, but we also believe sin is horrific as it dishonours God. They believe that sin is treason against God. We believe everyone will be resurrected and have to face God for a judgment, but not everyone will be saved. Only those who are righteous and follow God.

Not even all Mormons will be saved, which is another misconception. It all depends on what kind of relationship the have with God. I have no idea where you got all your information for your article, but perhaps you should have gone to LDS. As one commenter mentioned, if you want to know about Mormons, ask as Mormon, or visit their website to find out what their beliefs are. Dear Alex, Great explanation! I am just starting to look into it but so far with our talks with these two guys its literally the same as most other christians and im not saying I know everything yet but what I have learned is different then what people judge and claim them to be.

God gave us good ole sweet tea do love and drink the shit out of it and I will drink that shit till the day I die. Their apologists argue that the beliefs unique to the LDS are incompatible with the Bible and unsupportable from either tradition or history.

The Mormons believe in modern prophets, beginning with Joseph Smith, Jr. Mormons believe in God the Father, the Son Christ , and the Holy Ghost existing as three separate individual beings or personages while the Christians regard Christ as immortal and believe in the Trinity. Mormons, like mainstream Christians, also believe that Jesus Christ is the essential path for salvation. They also believe in a form of theosis called exaltation or eternal progression, which states that man can achieve Godhood and that God didn't just make man in His image but that God was a man who became exalted, and that men, angels and God are part of the same species.

In the video below, an interfaith panel discusses how Judaism , Christianity , Islam , and Mormonism view the concept of God differently. Christians believe that all people should strive to follow Christ's commands and example in their everyday actions. For many, this includes obedience to the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament.

Other Christian practices include acts of piety such as prayer and Bible reading. Christians assemble for communal worship on Sunday, the day of the resurrection, though other liturgical practices often occur outside this setting. Scripture readings are drawn from the Old and New Testaments , but especially the Gospels.

Mormons wear ceremonial temple garments under their daily clothes and perform baptisms for the dead, and other ordinances by proxy, in temples and doing attendant genealogical research.

A dietary code called the Word of Wisdom, currently requiring abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and illegal drugs; caffeinated soft drinks are left to individual discretion. Virtually all Christians hold special ceremonies or rites, often called sacraments. The Mormons call these ceremonies ordinances.

While Mormons are expected to confess their sins directly to God as repentance, some Christians Catholics confess their sins to a priest. Mormons do not accept the baptisms by other Christian denominations as valid.

They point to Acts where Paul rebaptized some prophesing Christians as evidence that the proper authority is necessary. Most denominations of Christianity reject Mormon claims of additional scriptures, and of the prophetic office of Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders; they disagree with Mormon claims that they have committed apostasy. Doctrines such as the beliefs about early American civilizations, which are unique to Mormon theology and not found in the teachings of mainstream Christian churches are also causes of disagreement.

Nonetheless, many Christian denominations treat Mormons with respect, while not minimizing the differences in belief. In Mormonism the hierarchy of authority begins with Jesus Christ himself and continues to the Presidency of the Church.

The President of the Church is the highest ecclesiastical authority on the Earth and is often referred to as "the Prophet. The Prophet is assisted by two counselors, who together with him form the "First Presidency" of the Church. The Presidency, along with the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which have equal authority, unitedly lead the church. These leaders are considered to be prophets, seers, and revelators. No decision is made for the Church as a whole without absolute unanimity on the part of these 15 men.

In Christianity, with Jesus Christ as Son of God, the hierarchy consists of priests, ministers, pastors and bishops. Christianity regards the Holy Bible, a collection of canonical books in two parts the Old Testament and the New Testament as authoritative: written by human authors under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and therefore the inerrant Word of God.

Data suggest that there are around 1. Christianity is the world's largest religion. It has very less of a presence in China and the middle east. Revelations 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
