How do teams work in civ 5
Civilization V can be fun to play multiplayer. However, there are some "quirks" that can make things frustrating or difficult. This article attempts to list the quirks and workarounds to ensure people can have an enjoyable game. It assumes the reader is familiar with Civilization V in single player mode.
The information provided here relates to version 1. This option enables the players to carry out their tasks at the same time, rather than waiting for their turn. In the current version 1. In a multiplayer game, there is a period of time between clicking the "Next Turn" button and the next turn actually happening, because other human players may not have finished their turns yet. This period of time is indicated through the UI with the button being greyed out and displaying "Please Wait" check this , and can be used to do things, which happen at the immediate start of your next turn, if valid this needs to be checked.
This can be a little confusing as there is minimal UI feedback that the order has been accepted. Fixed in 1. There is now an option to stop focus stealing in the options menu. Civilization V 's multiplayer saving and loading for multiplayer games is currently a bit unpolished and inconsistent at present. Here are the current observations:. I don't know if other people have observed the same problem, but when I play hotseat, human players have to be on the same team or else the game will inevitably freeze up at some point.
I don't have the issue with single player games. It's weird. We can go back to a saved game, but it usually freezes up at the same point again. Eagle Pursuit , Feb 26, You should always be researching the same techs in team games.
If you can research Pottery in 10 turns and your ally can research Animal Husbandry in 10 turns, you are better off doubling up and finishing each of them in 5 turns. This way you get the benefits of one tech sooner without delaying the time it takes to finish both.
In some cases, this may actually speed up the research of the second tech say you finish Education before Guilds and rush buy universities, now you can tech Guilds faster. Even when there is a discrepancy in bpt you are better off all researching the same thing.
In fact, not doing so puts you at a disadvantage since I believe tech costs are multiplied linearly based on number of players. So if an ancient era tech would normally take a single player 10 turns to finish, it will take a single player 20 turns to finish it if two are playing on the same team. Zezima , Feb 26, And I'm not sure about other wonders, but teammates will share the terrain cost effect of the Great Wall.
I know for a fact the worker bonus from the Great Pyramids is not shared. I'm not sure why the GW is so special since it can be really frustrating. I've thought bit about which teammate would be the best. Does Sweden's friend bonus apply automatically to teammates? If so, they are a helpful teammate for Babylon, China, and Korea. Polynesia is a good teammate for anyone because they meet civs on other landmasses sooner than the rest. Babylon, Korea, and the Mayans are good teammates because they help plow through techs even faster.
The Huns The Dutch and Arabians would be good teammates for luxury sharing. Americans help reveal the map faster and any tech ruins they find help teammates too.
I tried a team game. I was Mongolia and teamed myself up with Songhai. I forget who we were against, but I thought that, between my Keshiks and his Mandchalu Cavalry, we'd terrorize the globe and earn an easy domination victory.
Unfortunately, every time a started a war with one of the AI, Askia would sign a peace treaty and screw things up. PibbZ , Feb 26, Joined: Feb 20, Messages: I play teams reasonably often - my son and I against paired teams of AIs, immortal level. Other "features" not mentioned: As well as Great Wall affecting both members of a team somewhat jarring when the AI that built it is on a different undiscovered continent than the AI team member you're attacking!
AIs are just handicapped if they are teamed up. Teams are also broken for human players, especially units. There are many things how human players can abuse the game when playing as team.
For example unit promotions are saved when gifting units and some unique ability or wonder bonuses work as promotions. Having unique units on same era would allow funny mixed UU play when gifting units, but on the other hand units on different eras makes possible to have weird promotions rough gifting and promoting gifted units. You would be competing each others for city states. Each teammember also share city state attack penalty, so declaration of war against a city state counts as two, making you getting penalties already from the first stolen worker.
Victory conditions are also broken on team games. Domination and Science work ok, though there is just one spaceship per team AI might not be able to win that. Diplomatic victory is just both players to vote one of them, which makes it super easy for human and AIs would just vote for themselves. Culture victory is almost impossible on the other hand, as there can be only one winner.
One human player must get influential also with the other human player in same team to win. That must be done without bonuses from diplomats or shared trade routes impossible when teamed up making it very hard. You can gift great persons except prophets which makes it little bit easier if that is the goal from the start. Co-op is a broken mess, but it can be fun if not played too seriously and played against singular AIs. I have been playing some fun games with my girlfriend in same team when not playing too seriously.
Domination works best and competing in the team who gets more capitals conquered. Double Huns and Double Assyria games were fun roleplaying as different factions of a same nation.
